About Alex

Alex Miller photographed by Julian Kingma Alex Miller was born in South London. He left home at 15 and worked as a farm labourer in the west country of England. He travelled alone to Australia at age 16 and worked as a ringer in Queensland with Indigenous stockman on their country. In his twenties he went to night school and gained entry to Melbourne University where he studied history and literature. He began writing in his twenties. His first short story, inspired by his friend, Max Blatt, was published in Meanjin in 1975. Alex taught writing part-time at Holmesglen TAFE and at La Trobe University while writing his novels.

Alex Miller is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. He is published internationally and widely in translation.

Alex and his wife, Stephanie, lived in Port Melbourne for over 20 years before relocating to the Victorian town of Castlemaine in 2001. They have two children and two grandchildren. Alex writes full time and is currently writing The Minister, a novel in the contemporary world viewed through the eyes of a retired Australian politician.
